The Orthodontic Treatment Process

Orthodontic treatment is the treatment of malocclusion of the teeth, meaning a bad bite, which include, but are not limited to:

Poor dental alignment, including crowding or open spaces, which may negatively impact jaw and proper dental function.
Excessive Overbite, where the upper front teeth extend out over the lower front teeth, sometimes causing the lower front teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth.
Cross bite, a condition where the upper teeth close inside the lower teeth.
Open bite, where the uppder and lower front teeth do not overlap, and proper chewing can be impacted by this bite. An open bite may cause a number of unwanted habits, such as tongue thrusting.
Underbite, where the lower jaw extends out, causing the lower front teeth to sit in front of the upper front teeth

Early Treatment

You probably know that it’s never too late to see an orthodontist, but did you know that earlier may be better than later? According to the American Association of Orthodontists, kids should have an initial orthodontic screening at age 7. What makes early evaluation — and potentially, early treatment — so important?

There are several ways that kids can benefit from seeing an orthodontist at an early age. But it’s important to recognize that early evaluation isn’t necessarily followed by early treatment; in most cases, if orthodontic work isn’t immediately needed, we monitor your child’s dental and skeletal growth until it’s the appropriate time for treatment to begin. This gives us an opportunity to get the best results in the most efficient way, and to help prevent small problems from turning into big problems/

Treatment for common orthodontic problems typically begins around age 10-13, when all of the baby teeth are gone and many of the permanent ones are in place. But there are some conditions that are much easier to treat if they’re caught at an early age, before the adolescent growth spurt. These include severe crowding, crossbite, protruding teeth and underbite. Orthodontic treatment, including braces and/or orthodontic appliances, can be successfully used to correct or reduce problems at this stage, making future treatment (if needed) significantly easier and shorter.

Adolescent Treatment

There are several good reasons why adolescence is the optimal time for orthodontic treatment, though occasionally even earlier intervention is called for. One has to do with the development of the teeth: Generally, by the age of 11-13, the deciduous (baby) teeth have all been lost, and the permanent ones have largely come in.

Orthodontic problems don’t improve with age — they simply become harder to treat. It’s easier to treat many orthodontic problems during adolescence because the body is growing very rapidly at this time which makes the bones and tissue much more pliable. By treating in this time period, we can create a significantly improved appearance and function in a short period of time. In later years, when the bones of the face and jaw are fully developed, many conditions become more difficult and take longer to treat.

There’s even a social element to getting orthodontic treatment in adolescence. If you need braces, you’re not alone! Chances are you’ll see some of your classmates in our office, and you may even make new friends as you go through the process together. When it’s done, you’ll have a confident smile that you can be proud of, and benefits that will last your whole life.

Adult Treatment

We’re seeing more and more adult orthodontic patients, and it’s not hard to figure out why. Many adults realize that investing in a smile makeover can have significant benefits, socially and professionally. Straightening teeth can be an important part of that confidence-boosting makeover process. And, appliances that are barely noticeable have been advanced to give adults more discreet choices when it comes to orthodontic treatment.

Healthy teeth can be moved at any age, so there’s no such thing as being too old for braces. However, orthodontic treatment for adults is different in two important aspects: For one thing, the growth and development of the jaws is complete in adults, so changes in actual jaw structure can’t be accomplished with orthodontic appliances in the way they can with a growing child.

Secondly, periodontal (gum) disease is more prevalent in adults than in children. Orthodontics applies gentle forces to your teeth so they can move through their surrounding bone. Gum tissues must be healthy to do this, so any gum disease must be brought under control before orthodontic treatment begins.

And when your braces are removed? As with orthodontic treatment at any age wearing a retainer after orthodontic treatment is crucial. Teeth that are not held in place by a retainer long enough for new supporting bone to develop around them can drift back to their original positions, and that’s certainly not something we — or you — want to see happen. We will make sure to instruct you on how to retain your new, confident smile so that it continues to make you look and feel great for years to come.

Growth & Guidance Kids Club

Did you see our doctor and he recommended treatment later, not now? Well you’re in luck! Our office has growth and guidance visits (sometimes called observation or recall by other offices), free of charge, until you are ready for orthodontic treatment! It means you’re a member of our Kid’s Club!

Our Kid’s Club is fun. When you come (typically every 6-10 months) for an orthodontic check up with the doctor, he’ll take a peek, maybe retake an x-ray, and update mom and dad on your progress and potential treatment timeline.

And for you, we have games! Each time you come, you get to play the game and win prizes, including gift cards for treats and toys from our office. Additionally, if you wear your very own Dietrich Orthodontics Kid’s Club shirt to your appointment, you are entered into a yearly contest JUST for the Kid’s Club! The prize last year was an iPod and this year it’s a Kindle Fire. Wear your shirt to win!

And most importantly, once a year we have a big party for just the Kid’s Club members. Last year it was at the North Canton Skate Center. The doctors rent out the place, just for the Kid’s Club and their families. We skate, play games, climb the rock wall, and enjoy lunch together. We hope we will see you at the next event!
